ORIGIN

The pure Emma Green organic oregano oil comes from the sun-drenched regions of the Greek Mediterranean coast. In these organic growing areas, the climatic conditions are perfect, allowing the oregano plants to fully develop their valuable ingredients such as carvacrol and thymol. This guarantees a high-quality essential oil with a particularly intense aroma.

FARM

We source our essential oregano oil from small, family-run businesses in Greece. These farms place great importance on organic farming and work according to the strictest organic standards. The oregano plants are cultivated traditionally and sustainably. After harvesting, the gentle steam distillation takes place directly on site to ensure the highest purity and quality of the oil.

PLANT

Oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and thrives particularly well in the Mediterranean climate of Greece. The plants develop strong, green leaves and small white flowers. Oregano is known for its high content of carvacrol, which is valued for its strong antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

SCENT

The Emma Green Organic Oregano Oil exudes a spicy, strong scent with subtle, bitter notes that are reminiscent of Mediterranean herb gardens. Perfect for a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere.

Oregano essential oil in the kitchen: The aromatic secret weapon for tasty dishes

Oregano essential oil is a powerful, natural product that impresses with its aromatic aroma. Have you ever wondered how this oil is extracted, or whether you can even use it in your kitchen? Or are you looking for tips on how to make oregano oil yourself? Then you've come to the right place. In the following article, you'll learn what essential oils are and how oregano oil is extracted. On top of that, it contains delicious recipe ideas and detailed instructions that describe how you can make your own oregano oil to flavor your favorite dishes.

What are essential oils?

Essential oilsare highly concentrated, volatile plant extractswhich contain the essence - the characteristic scent and taste - of the plant from which they were extracted. They are obtained from various parts of a plant such as leaves, flowers, roots, peels and resins using various extraction methods such as steam distillation, cold pressing or solvent extraction.Due to their concentrated nature, they must be used diluted,to avoid side effects.

How is oregano oil produced?

High qualityOregano oil is mainly obtained by gentle steam distillation. In this gentle process, steam is passed through the plant materials, releasing the essential oils. The steam containing the oil is then cooled, causing the oil to separate from the water. The resulting product is a highly concentrated oregano essential oil that is rich in active compounds such as carvacrol and thymol. This extraction process allows theto effectively preserve the valuable ingredients of oregano without destroying the sensitive compounds through heat. Oregano oil obtained in this way is known for its purity and potency and is valued for its excellent properties in the kitchen.

Can you eat oregano oil?

Oregano oil can indeed be consumed, but this should be done with caution and in very small quantities.Organic oregano oil, which is specifically labelled for consumption, can be used in the kitchento give dishes an intense flavor. However, because of its high concentration, it is important to dilute oregano oil before consumption. A few drops mixed with a carrier oil such as olive oil or incorporated into food are enough to enrich the flavor without being overwhelming. When buying, it is important to pay attention to the quality and purity of the oil and to choose products that are certified safe for consumption.

Oregano oil: recipe ideas to try

Oregano oil, with its strong and spicy aroma, is a great ingredient to add a Mediterranean touch to dishes. Here are some simple recipe ideas that show how you can creatively use oregano oil in your kitchen.

  • Oregano dressing for salads:Combine a drop of oregano essential oil with 3 tablespoons of olive oil, a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, a little mustard, salt and pepper to create a flavorful dressing. Perfect for fresh vegetable salads or to give your Greek salad an extra kick.
  • Flavored Oregano Butter:Mix a drop of oregano oil with 100 grams of soft butter, a pinch of salt and chopped garlic. Use this butter on grilled bread, steaks or as a delicious addition to cooked vegetables.
  • Marinades for meat:For a flavorful meat dish, mix two drops of oregano oil with olive oil, lemon juice, chopped garlic, salt and pepper. Marinate the chicken, lamb or beef for a few hours or overnight before grilling or roasting.
  • Oregano oil for pasta and pizza:Add a drop of oregano oil to half a cup of olive oil. Add some chopped garlic, a few chili flakes and a pinch of salt and let all the ingredients sit for at least a week. This flavored oil can be drizzled over pasta, pizza or even fresh bread to add extra flavor.
  • Oregano oil for soups and stews:A single drop of oregano oil is enough to add depth and warmth to soups and stews. It goes particularly well with tomato soups, lentil stews and vegetarian dishes.
  • Oregano potatoes:Mix a few drops of diluted oregano oil with olive oil, salt, pepper and your favorite herbs. Toss diced potatoes in the mixture and bake until crispy and golden.

Since essential oils are very intense, you should always start with a small amount when cooking with oregano oil and slowly work your way up to the desired intensity according to your taste. Experiment with these ideas and discover how versatile oregano oil can be in the kitchen!

How to make oregano oil yourself

The following method of preparation is a simple and worthwhile way to enjoy the benefits of the herb. Give it a try. With the following instructions, you can prepare it in no time:

Required ingredients & materials

  • Fresh oregano leaves for flavor.
  • A high-quality carrier oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil.
  • A clean jar with a lid.
  • A fine sieve or cheesecloth.
  • A dark bottle for storage.

Step 1: Prepare oregano

Start by washing the oregano leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities. Allow the leaves to air dry completely or gently pat them dry with a clean cloth.

Step 2: Chop the leaves

To release the essential oils, the oregano leaves must first be crushed. The best way to do this is to pound them in a mortar.

Step 3: Add carrier oil

Place the chopped oregano leaves into the clean jar and pour the carrier oil of your choice over them, making sure all the leaves are completely covered.

Step 4: Let it brew

Close the jar tightly and place it in a warm, sunny place. Let the oil steep for about two to three weeks. Shake the jar every few days to mix the ingredients well.

Step 5: Filter the oil

After the oil has had enough time to infuse, use a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove the oregano leaves, squeezing the leaves to extract as much oil as possible.

Step 6: Pour into dark bottle

Now fill the filtered oil into a dark bottle. This will protect it from light and automatically extend its shelf life. Store your homemade oregano oil in a cool, dark place. It will then last for around 5 months.

Important:The ratio of oregano to carrier oil can be adjusted depending on the desired strength of the oil. A general guideline is one part oregano to two parts carrier oil. If fresh oregano is not available, you can also use dried oregano, but keep in mind that it is more concentrated and you will need less.
